Just fifteen miles from the glitz and clamor of the Las Vegas Strip rest ancient hills rich in history, beauty, and wonder. For those who need a break from the raucous buzz of downtown Vegas, there are few places better (and certainly none closer) than Red Rock Canyon.

Formally known as “The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area,” the valleys, cliffs, and caves of Red Rock Canyon will thrill and amaze the casual visitor – those who prefer a stroll or even just a drive – and the more serious hiker, cyclist, or climber alike. The primeval stones of the area offer up a rich palate of desert color, ranging from alabaster white to warm beiges all the way to the blood-red sandstone for which Red Rock is named.

The canyons and trails of this enchanted region have been home to human beings since time immemorial: Paiute and Anasazi Natives were among the tribes which made their homes here over the millennia, and even today you will see ancient petroglyphs carved into the storied stones. Today the area is home to tortoises, hares, and even the occasional bighorn sheep.

Red Rock Canyon has been wonderfully preserved over the years, so not counting the many fellow visitors you are likely to encounter when the weather is fair, you’ll lose yourself in a landscape almost untouched by modern life. Children (and the young at heart) will thrill at exploring the many narrow chasms and caves that veer off from the main trails and people of all ages and fitness levels will find paths they can easily traverse while taking in the natural splendor around them.

One look up at the cerulean blue sky from the temperate depths of a striking red walled canyon will confirm that your first visit to Red Rock Canyon will not be your last. Especially when you can get there in all of six or seven turns off the Las Vegas Strip…
